Aging in Place at Home: A Better Alternative

Aging in Place at Home: A Better Alternative

An estimated three-quarters of older adults plan to live in their own homes as they age, according to an AARP survey. But how realistic is that aspiration – and more important, is achieving it really in your best interest?

“Aging in place – most of us think of this as the decision, as we get older, to stay in our longtime family homes … [which] hold so many memories and are a source of affirmation of the success we’ve had in our lives,” says Elizabeth Bauer, an actuarial consultant writing for Forbes. “But does it ‘work’? Is it the right path for us all to take as we age?”

Not always.

Aging at home can be a positive experience – but there are many caveats, according to Julie Irvin, PhD, LNHA, Director of Health Services at The Glenridge on Palmer Ranch in Sarasota.

“If you have the same level of services throughout the continuum of care … if you can maintain socialization … and if you don’t need advanced health care, then aging in place can be a good decision,” she says.

But those are significant “ifs.”

People may want to stay in their home to remain closer to neighbors and friends. But as years pass and neighbors move away, they may feel lonely and isolated as it becomes harder to spark new friendships. And if their health worsens, there can be an increased burden on family and caregivers.

On the other hand, adults who move to communities like The Glenridge can benefit from a strong social network with classes, activities, and opportunities to engage with new people.

“The difference between staying at home and moving into a Life Plan Community is that throughout the continuum, quality of life, socialization and relationships are maintained,” adds Irvin. “When you’re at home, all the ‘what-ifs’ are always going to be there; if you’re at a community like The Glenridge, we take care of them.  We’re able to provide the supportive care you need … in the environment best suited to your needs, whether that’s assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation and our Living Well Clinic for routine checkups.”

According to researchers W. H. Thomas and J. M. Blanchard in their seminal article, Moving Beyond Place: “Feeling compelled to stay in one’s home, no matter what, can result in dwindling choices.”

Those choices matter – and at The Glenridge, we strive to create an environment that gives you more control over the decisions that shape your future.
