Paying a visit to Elisabeth Root’s Glenridge apartment is a bit like walking into a museum: Everywhere you look, you’ll see intricate needlepoint tapestries and detailed paintings – almost all made by Elisabeth herself.
Born and raised in Vienna, Austria, Elisabeth has always loved the arts. But it wasn’t until she retired that she had the opportunity to explore her own creative side. As an artist, she says that the culture in Sarasota is one of the reasons she loves life at The Glenridge.
“When I first game in to visit, my eyes got wider and wider with everything I saw,” she says. “There’s a theatre here, and they bring in singers, choirs, the opera, the orchestra – you are never far from music and art.”
The theatre – an elegant 260-seat Glenridge Performing Arts Center (GPAC) – is a big draw for members and locals alike. Encompassing a full proscenium stage with state-of-the-art lighting and sound, GPAC is a truly “professional” venue that routinely hosts performers from Sarasota’s world-class opera and ballet.
There’s no doubt GPAC takes center stage in The Glenridge’s art scene, but art aficionados can also take advantage of a cast of creative programs, ranging from hands-on painting classes to courses on art history and music appreciation at the Glenridge Academy. We also recently opened a campus Art Gallery as part of GPAC’s Theatre District, featuring a rotating selection of works by both members and Florida artists.
