Live Fulfilled: The Intangible Benefits of Life at The Glenridge

You can’t put a number on peace of mind. But often, it’s the intangible factors that matter most in choosing a community where you can not only live, but flourish – and that’s exactly what you’ll find at The Glenridge.

In fact, some of the most important benefits you’ll find here are measured not in checklists of amenities or features … but in years added to life, and life to years.

Modern research has found a strong connection between active, meaningful living and increased longevity – including one remarkable 80-year study by Harvard Medical School that gathered data on hundreds of participants throughout their lives, marriages and careers, beginning in 1938 and concluding in 2018.

“The surprising finding is that our relationships and how happy we are in our relationships has a powerful influence on our health,” said Robert Waldinger, the study’s director and a Harvard professor of psychiatry. “Taking care of your body is important, but tending to your relationships is a form of self-care too. That, I think, is the revelation.”

Throughout life’s ups and downs, our relationships with the people around us proved integral to not only emotional well-being, but also intellectual and physical health. As the Harvard Gazette put it, strong social ties can “delay mental and physical decline, and are better predictors of long and happy lives than social class, IQ, or even genes.”

Simply put, those with strong social connections stay happier and healthier – and there’s evidence to show that where you live makes a big difference in social wellbeing throughout life.

More recently, another longitudinal study by the Mather Institute (Age Well, 2019) surveyed more than 5,000 residents from 80 senior living communities across the nation and found that living in a community like The Glenridge is associated with greater emotional and social wellness overall – including improved social well-being, a stronger sense of purpose, healthier behaviors, and more optimism.

While there’s plenty more research to be done on the connection between community and healthy aging, we at The Glenridge have seen firsthand how the right environment can empower health and inspire happiness throughout life. But you don’t have to take our word for it – instead, ask our members.

“There’s a feeling – a magnetic culture – you can’t convey in a brochure or on a checklist,” comments member Linda Lichtman, who joined The Glenridge with her husband Mort last year. “There’s no anxiety or worry at all. The energy and warmth we’ve felt living here are like nowhere else.”

Mort and Linda’s story is one shared by many Glenridge members whose lives seem to “open up” after they move in, filling them with renewed purpose and personal freedom. We call that feeling The Glenridge Effect, and it’s something that can’t be quantified. It can only be experienced.
